NEXUS LETTERS & MEDICAL EVIDENCE

Nexus Letters & Independent Medical Evidence

The right evidence. The right medical provider. The right medical question.

WHAT IS A NEXUS LETTER?

Independent Medical Evidence for VA Claims

A nexus letter is an independent medical opinion addressing the relationship between a veteran's current medical condition and military service, another service-connected disability, or the aggravation of an existing condition.

HLS first reviews the veteran's circumstances and available evidence to determine whether a medical opinion may be appropriate. When medical expertise is required, the case may be referred to an independent qualified medical professional whose specialty and scope of practice are appropriate for the condition being reviewed.

Evidence First. Medical Opinion Second.

HLS does not sell guaranteed favorable medical opinions. A legitimate medical opinion must be supported by the evidence — not predetermined by payment.

WHEN A NEXUS LETTER MAY APPLY

  • Direct service connection — condition caused by military service
  • Secondary service connection — condition caused or aggravated by a service-connected disability
  • Aggravation — pre-existing condition worsened beyond natural progression by service

MEDICAL OPINION TYPES

Types of Medical Opinions

DIRECT SERVICE CONNECTION

Medical review addressing whether a current diagnosed condition is at least as likely as not related to an event, injury, illness, exposure, or circumstance that occurred during military service.

SECONDARY SERVICE CONNECTION

Medical review addressing whether a current condition was caused by an already service-connected disability.

AGGRAVATION

Medical review addressing whether a condition was aggravated beyond its natural progression by military service or by an existing service-connected disability, when medically appropriate.

MEDICAL RECORD & EVIDENCE REVIEW

Professional review of available medical and service records to identify relevant evidence, medical questions, and potential gaps before determining whether a formal medical opinion is appropriate.

Every case is different. The availability and scope of an opinion depend on the evidence, diagnosis, medical specialty, and independent professional judgment of the reviewing provider.

Medical Provider Disclaimer: Medical professionals working with Hope Legal Services exercise independent professional judgment. Provider availability and the ability to issue a medical opinion depend upon the medical condition, available evidence, requested medical question, professional scope of practice, and the reviewing provider's independent medical judgment. Engagement of a physician does not guarantee that a favorable medical opinion can be issued or that VA will grant any claim or benefit.

HOW IT WORKS

Our Process

01

Initial Case Review

We identify the disability, VA history, theory of service connection, and evidence already available.

02

Records Review

Relevant service, VA, and private medical records are reviewed.

03

Medical Provider Review

When appropriate, the case is referred to a qualified independent medical professional.

04

Medical Opinion

The provider independently evaluates the medical evidence and determines whether a medical opinion can be supported.

05

Final Evidence Package

Completed documentation is returned for use in the veteran's VA claim.

No Guaranteed Opinions.

A Nexus Letter should be based on the medical evidence.

HLS does not guarantee that a medical provider will issue a favorable opinion, and no legitimate medical opinion should be predetermined simply because a veteran paid for a review.

Evidence first. Opinion second.

Need to Know Whether Your Case Needs a Nexus Letter?

Don't purchase medical evidence simply because someone told you every VA claim needs a Nexus Letter. Let us review the issue first.
