HOW VA MATH WORKS

  1. Disabilities are sorted from highest to lowest rating.
  2. The highest rating is applied to 100 "whole person" units, leaving a remainder.
  3. Each subsequent rating applies only to the remaining efficiency — not the full 100.
  4. All disabled portions are summed, then rounded to the nearest 10%.
  5. This is why two 50% ratings do not equal 100% — they combine to 75%, rounded to 80%.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

What This Calculator Cannot Tell You

Bilateral Factor

If you have disabilities affecting both arms or both legs, the VA applies a bilateral factor that can increase your combined rating.

Dependent Adjustments

Veterans with spouses, children, or dependent parents receive higher monthly compensation. Rates shown here are for a single veteran.

SMC (Special Monthly Compensation)

Some veterans may qualify for additional Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) above the standard rate. SMC eligibility requires individual factual analysis and is not estimated by this calculator.

TDIU (Total Disability)

Even below 100%, you may qualify for TDIU — paid at the 100% rate — if your disabilities prevent substantially gainful employment.

Evidence & Nexus

Your actual rating depends on the strength of your medical evidence and nexus letters, not just the claimed percentages.

VA Adjudication

The VA may assign different individual ratings than expected. An accredited claims agent can help you build the strongest possible claim.
